The Corolla Coalition

In design, there’s a crucial difference between saying “this is what it would look like” and “this is how it would be made”. Eunice Wan’s work bridges that gap, where concept meets real-world execution.

Through building a 1:1 scale installation for her master’s degree thesis project at the Royal College of Art, Eunice has gained first-hand experience in the realisation stages of design. This includes managing budget, machinery and material constraints, as well as developing strong proficiency in assembly and joinery techniques. Eunice’s broader practice focuses on immersive, emotionally resonant interior spaces. With a meticulous control of materiality, circulation, and FF&E, she crafts environments that highlight experiential narratives and lead users through intentional, sensory-driven journeys.

Thesis Project: The Corolla Coalition

The Corolla Coalition aims to guide estranged individuals through the process of reconciliation by making reconnection more approachable. This is achieved by allowing individuals to control the degree of contact and proximity with their estranged counterpart in preparation for face-to-face conversation.

The journey begins with a distortive visual barrier between the two participants that invites them reacclimate to each others’ presence. Prompts along the installation encourage self-reflection and emotional preparation to foster a positive and productive mindset. As they move down the apparatus, distortion is exchanged for obscuration as perforated biodegradable blocks reveal more visual connection in tandem with emotional progress. The installation culminates in a shared seating area, reminiscent of a casual coffee meeting, where full visibility encourages open, vulnerable conversation. This thoughtful progression creates a safe and gentle space for resolving conflict and rediscovering connection.

In a time where conflict resolution is more crucial than ever, this work invites us to move toward greater peace and harmony, both within ourselves and with others.
